As you may already be aware, the convention is where the nominee is actually selected and these delegates are the ones who actually vote on the nominee. Just because someone wins the primary, doesn’t necessarily mean they will get WV’s votes at the convention. It depends on who the delegates are.

It will take 1,144 delegates to win the nomination at the Republican national convention this summer.

How this works:

There are 18 “at large” spots statewide, so the top 18 vote-getters become the at large delegates. Each congressional district also has 3 delegates from that district, so the top 3 each of those races (total of 9) also become delegates. Ideally, we would get 18 like-minded people to file at large and 3 more in each congressional district and circulate their names around to all the tea party groups in the state so that anyone from our groups voting in the Republican primary (including independents) will be encouraged to go in and mark those same people. If we coordinate this effort, we should be able to throw the vote in our direction and get our people elected.

Does our POPULAR vote really count? As long as our primary in West Virginia is not until May, we really have no choice on Presidential candidates. Our best bet is to PICK GOOD DELEGATES TO THE Convention AND concert our efforts on electing good conservative candidates for Senate, Congress and local offices.

It is time for good folks to come to the defense of the nation and WV. Candidate filing period in WV extends through January 28 and I urge all members of the Tea Party and Republican Party to consider being a candidate at every level - federal, state and local. Contested primaries are healthy for good government. The Republican ballot is quite strong but we need to continue to strengthen, build, and introduce new leaders to the public. name the candidate you are supporting.

the voters have a right to know. when i vote in the primary, i will not vote for an "uncommitted" delegate. surely someone interested enough to run for a delegate position has already figured out who they support,,,and i think it is the delegate's obligation to tell the voters who that is. you can not ask the voters to vote for you if you will not disclose who you support.

Comment by Sandra Staats on January 20, 2012 at 8:07pm: Thoughts from a friend on WV Tea Party hub: A couple of thoughts on this - If you're running in the whole state or Congressional District, name recognition in your county is not going to make a lot of difference. Also, you would probably get nearly as many votes in your county as the two well known candidates because most voters would vote for all candidates in their home county.
As to West Virginia not having much impact because the primary is so late; the Tea Party was so opposed to the idea of another convention that it probably was the main factor in getting the Republican Party to vote, at its Summer Meeting, to not hold another Convention like the one in 2008 when three of the main four candidates showed up in Charleston. Rush Limbaugh often refers to West Virginia having been a major factor in that Primary.... "It all started in West Virginia". WE might get the Primary moved up in the future, but a more certain course would be an earlier Convention, where a relatively small but organized group can have a major impact.
